Ukrainian people, like every nation of the world has their own sacred things. One of these things and the national pride of our people is Taras Shevchenko and his creative works. It’s hard to find a Ukrainian who would not know at least a few lines of Shevchenko’s poetry.
The 207th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birth is an opportunity for new research. The research group of our college have done it. They have known that the life and work of Great Kobzar was closely connected with Kyiv region.  Shevchenko often visited our region, including the lands of Bila Tserkva.
According to many historians, Taras Shevchenko was in Bila Tserkva several times. When Taras was a servant of Engelhardt, who was the relative of Branitsky, he visited Bila Tserkva on the way to Vilno. Branitska showed him her mantion and the park.
Once again Taras was in Bila Tserkva in 1845. He came there to see the park Alexandria which was famous for its beauty even at that time and to learn the history and architectural monuments of the ancient town. This travelling was narrated in the story "Walk with plague and without morals", written by Shevchenko in 1856. Thus, there is no doubt about his staying on our land as there are two mentions about Shevchenko’s staying in Bila Tserkva.
Shevchenko is really on the top of Ukrainian and world culture as a brilliant poet and artist.
Ukrainian people honour the memory of the great poet.
Every year the competitions among readers of Shevchenko’s poetry take place in Bila Tserkva.
There are streets and squares named in honour of the great poet in our town. The monument to Taras Shevchenko was opened in Bila Tserkva in September, 22, 1991. There is the monument to Taras Shevchenko at the central gate of the park Alexandria in Bila Tserkva. The town’s park was renamed from Petrovsky to Taras Shevchenko’s park according to the decision of the City Council in 2003.
Thanks to research group consists of English teachers and students from our college we can tell that the deeper we study the life and works of Taras Shevchenko , the more we are impressed with this phenomenon of this Great Ukrainian!
